Accutane and Crohn's Disease
Abdominal pain, severe or chronic diarrhea and/or rectal bleeding can either separately or together be signs of a serious condition. If you have any of these symptoms and are taking or have taken Accutane, seek immediate medical attention because your symptoms could indicate one of the following serious Accutane side effects:
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease / Crohn's Disease / Regional Ileitis / Ulcerative Colitis / Pancolitis
- Liver Disease / Hepatitis / Hepatotoxicity
- Kidney Disease
- Pancreatitis/Hemorrhagic Pancreatitis
- Lupus
If you are taking Accutane or have taken Accutane in the past, abdominal pain may be a sign of a serious adverse reaction to the drug, and you should seek medical attention immediately.

Abdomen (stomach area) problems:
Certain symptoms may mean that your internal organs are being damaged. These organs include the liver, pancreas, bowel (intestines), and esophagus (connection between mouth and stomach). If your organs are damaged, they may not get better even after you stop taking Accutane. Stop taking Accutane and call your prescriber if you get severe stomach, chest or bowel pain, trouble swallowing or painful swallowing, new or worsening heartburn, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, yellowing of your skin or eyes, or dark urine.
Inflammatory bowel disease:
Accutane has been associated with inflammatory bowel disease (including regional ileitis) in patients without a prior history of intestinal disorders. In some instances, symptoms have been reported to persist after Accutane treatment has been stopped. Patients experiencing abdominal pain, rectal bleeding or severe diarrhea should discontinue Accutane immediately.
